Skiing Mt Mill ANTARCTICA

1/12/09 Skied Mt Mill. 900 metres (diary entry from Antarctica)
Today was totally off the hook, literally! It was really one of those amazing days. It was over cast in the morning when we set off from the boat and approached the summit. We had a little scare on the northern aspect just before the summit when we all heard the glacier breaking up over on the other peak. It was also getting late in the afternoon and it was so warm, everything was heating up fast. Once we headed up the summit, the conditions changed and the approach was much colder and we found much dryer snow, we were much happier with this as it felt like it wasn’t so much heat on this face. When we got to the summit and it was like a football field up there, it felt really safe up there. Chris skied off first and got some great turns in, Stian went next and then I followed. We got some really good turns in off the summit and then headed for the lower aspect, and had perfect corn turns. The last run to the ocean bed was amazing. Just before we dropped in we saw minki whales swimming around, we saw an ice berg implode itself, it was truly an nature overload. Really amazing! I got to drop in first and had some epic turns down to the ocean floor. The zodiac picked us up and we were all stoked. Doug Workman went for a courageous swim and should I say quick dip. We also had a minki whale follow us around and come under and around the boat which was awesome. The cove that we are parked called Circumzisiatin bay-which was kind of ironic as Stian had a small mishap tieing the line on shore where he ended up stradeling a sharp rock when his 2 feet slipped either side of it. Aside from that the cove here is really nice, you can only park here on fair weather so tonight was ideal. There were heaps of Gentou penguins here and it is such a beautiful anchoridge. We are all super pysched. Had sheperds pie for dinner. Am now ready for bed.
We scopped Mt Scott on the way back and the boys are psyched to ski that tomorrow morning. Plan to head out at 7am!
